What is the Woodsdale School Experience?

Woodsdale, a small farming community one hour from Hobart, is home to an historic pre-Federation pioneer school. An ongoing community project has transformed the old school building in Woodsdale into an interactive museum and classroom. The Woodsdale Museum opened in November 2006 and from 2007 an exciting range of programs has been developed for Tasmanian students of primary age grades 3 to 6. Bring your class along and be the first to experience exciting activities designed to keep primary-aged children engaged and enthralled.

What can my students see and do at Woodsdale?

Your students will be initiated into their Woodsdale experience by changing into period costume. In small groups, they will then experience a lesson in an authentic Federation classroom. Other activities may include playing games from the “olden days”, learning how to Waltz, practicing Copperplate, baking damper on an open fire, embarking on a treasure hunt or completing the Museum exhibition quiz. Before visiting you will need to select three activities from our list of eight all-year activities. Please click on the link Student Activities at Woodsdale at the bottom of this page for a full list of activities or call us for some friendly advice on how to design a program for your excursion.

How can I prepare my students for the visit?

The Woodsdale School Experience is an excellent tool to enhance your students’ understanding of Tasmanian history and the impact of people on environment. The Woodsdale Museum has employed a registered Tasmanian teacher to create activities based on the Woodsdale School Experience. Lesson plans are available from this page for you to download. They are full of ideas to use in your classroom both before and after your trip to Woodsdale.

What facilities and amenities are available?

The old Woodsdale School is one building with an outdoor toilet. A short walk downhill takes you to the Hall which is also used for some activities. Parking is ample and large buses can easily park on the school grounds or by the Hall.

How do I make a booking?

Due to the museum being run completely by dedicated volunteers, we are only able to offer one school group a month so please contact our secretary Frances Hillier by email to franhill@activ8.net.au  or our President Yvonne Crawford on 62 546 165 to make your booking so you don't miss out on this wonderful experience.

How do we get there?

The drive to Woodsdale School from Hobart takes approximately one hour. At Sorell, follow the signs to Orford. Turn left at the sign to Oatlands. Follow the sealed road to Levendale. Woodsdale School is 9 kilometres past Levendale on your right.
